Five* Wonderful Wineries to Tour/Taste in Nevada

*Nevada currently only has three commercial wineries, but we will keep watch and update with any new wineries; it is certainly a challenge to grow grapes in the desert!

1. Churchill Vineyards. Located in Fallon, in northwestern Nevada, about 60 miles east of Reno, this winery is located on the historic Frey Ranch (in Churchill County), at an elevation of about 4,000-feet, and is currently the only Nevada winery producing white wines from grapes grown within the state. The winemaker is a fifth generation farmer who is now growing European Vinifera grapes, producing premium wines. The vineyard's wines can be purchased at the winery, as well as other local (Reno-area) retailers. Selections include: Nevada-Grown Riesling, Nevada Grown Gewurztraminer, Nevada Grown Chardonnay-Semillon, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petite Sirah. Find the winery on Dodge Lane when open for tastings, Saturdays 12-4 pm. Learn more: Churchill Vineyards.

2. Pahrump Valley Winery. Located in Pahrump, in southwest Nevada, not far from the border with California, and about 61 miles west of Las Vegas, this winery uses grapes from their own estate vineyards, as well as several others around the state to produce wines from three labels: Charleston Peak (including Merlot, Sweet Melody, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, peak White Vintner's Blend, Sunset Rose Vintner's Blend, Zinfandel Ancient Vine, Syrah Barrel Reserve), Nevada Ridge (including Nevada Mourvedre, Nevada Primitivo, Nevada Zinfandel, Nevada Syrah, Nevada Silver State Red, Nevada Barbera, and Nevada Tempranillo), and Pahrump Valley Winery (including Symphony, Desert Blush, Burgundy, Creme Sherry). Come for a tasting, which runs 10:30 am to 5:00 pm every day -- and then stay for lunch or dinner at their upscale-casual (and top-rated) restaurant. They also have a wine club. Find them on Winery road. Learn more: Pahrump Valley Winery.

3. Sanders Family Winery. Located in Pahrump, in southwest Nevada, not far from the border with California, and about 61 miles west of Las Vegas, this winery was established in 1988 and has grown a lot in the past several decades -- to include the winery, visitor center, and performing arts amphitheater. Open seven days a week for free tastings. Wines include: Chardonnay, Serenity, Harmony, Merlot, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Burgundy, as well as Cream Sherry and Ruby Port Wine. Located on E. Kellogg Road. Learn more: Sanders Family Winery.

Bonus: Some Cheese to Go With Your Nevada Wine

Enjoy some locally-produced and award-winning cheese with that wine. After you've bought a few bottles -- or cases -- of wonderful Nevada wine, add to your experience with some handcrafted Tahoe artisan cheeses that use European farmstead process recipes and include only the freshest natural ingredients. Brands include Blue Peppercorn, Sierra Gold, Alpine Bleu, Chipotle Cheddar, Tomme De Sierra, and Nevada Cheddar. Find the cheese in several Reno and Carson City locations. Learn more: Tahoe Cheese.
